You set your oven to 375°F but your food comes out burnt — or undercooked. Oven temperature problems are more common than you might think, and they can ruin meals and waste energy. Expert Appliance Inc. has been repairing ovens and stoves in Brooklyn, NY and Marlboro, NJ since 1988.
1. Faulty Temperature Sensor (Most Common)
Modern ovens use a temperature sensor (also called a probe) to monitor the internal temperature. If the sensor is defective or touching the oven wall, it will give inaccurate readings. Fix: Make sure the sensor isn't touching the oven wall. If the problem persists, the sensor likely needs replacing — a quick and affordable repair.
2. Worn Out Bake or Broil Element
Electric ovens use bake and broil elements to generate heat. If an element is partially burned out, the oven may heat unevenly or not reach the set temperature. Fix: Visually inspect the elements for holes, blisters, or dark spots. A damaged element needs to be replaced.
3. Faulty Igniter (Gas Ovens)
Gas ovens use an igniter to open the gas valve and light the burner. A weak igniter may glow but not get hot enough to open the gas valve fully, resulting in a lower-than-set temperature. Fix: If the igniter takes more than 90 seconds to light the burner, it needs replacing.
4. Defective Oven Control Board
The electronic control board regulates the oven's temperature by controlling the heating elements or gas valve. A faulty board can cause erratic temperature behavior. Fix: Control board replacement requires a trained technician.
5. Oven Needs Calibration
Over time, ovens can drift from their calibrated temperature. Many ovens allow you to adjust the temperature offset in the settings menu. Check your owner's manual for instructions. If the offset is more than 35°F, there may be an underlying mechanical issue.
