Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? Top 7 Causes & Fixes

Back to Blog

Few appliance problems are as stressful as opening your refrigerator to find it warm inside. Your food is at risk, and every hour counts. At Expert Appliance Inc., we've been diagnosing and fixing refrigerators in Brooklyn, NY and Marlboro, NJ since 1988 — and we've seen every possible cause of a fridge that won't cool.

1. Dirty or Clogged Condenser Coils

The condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant. When they're coated in dust and debris, they can't dissipate heat efficiently, causing the fridge to run warm. Fix: Vacuum the coils (usually located on the back or underneath the unit) every 6–12 months.

2. Faulty Evaporator Fan Motor

The evaporator fan circulates cold air throughout the refrigerator and freezer compartments. If the fan motor fails, cold air won't reach the fridge section even if the freezer is still cold. Fix: Listen for unusual noises from the freezer — a failing fan motor often makes a squealing or grinding sound. This requires professional repair.

3. Broken Condenser Fan Motor

The condenser fan pulls air through the condenser coils and over the compressor. If it stops working, the compressor overheats and the fridge stops cooling. Fix: This is a job for a technician. Call Expert Appliance at 718-858-5444 (Brooklyn) or 732-946-0999 (Marlboro).

4. Defective Thermostat

The temperature control thermostat directs power to the compressor, evaporator fan, and condenser fan. A faulty thermostat can prevent the cooling system from running at all. Fix: Try turning the thermostat to its highest setting — if you don't hear the compressor kick on, the thermostat may need replacing.

5. Start Relay Failure

The start relay works with the compressor to start the cooling cycle. A failed start relay means the compressor won't start, and the fridge won't cool. Fix: Shake the start relay — if it rattles, it's likely defective. Replacement is inexpensive and can often be done same-day.

6. Low Refrigerant (Freon Leak)

Refrigerant leaks are less common but serious. If the refrigerant level is low, the cooling system can't function properly. Fix: This requires a certified technician. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself.

7. Compressor Failure

The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system. A failed compressor means no cooling at all. This is the most expensive repair, and in some cases it may be more cost-effective to replace the unit. Expert Appliance will give you an honest assessment.
