When a major appliance breaks, the first question most homeowners ask is: "Should I repair it or buy a new one?" At Expert Appliance Inc., we've been answering this question honestly for customers in Brooklyn, NY and Marlboro, NJ since 1988. Here's the guidance we give.
The 50% Rule
The general rule of thumb in the appliance industry is: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a new appliance, replacement is usually the better choice. But this rule has important exceptions based on the age of the appliance and the specific repair needed.
Refrigerators
Repair if: The appliance is less than 10 years old and the repair cost is under $400. Common repairs like thermostat replacement, door seal replacement, or ice maker repair are almost always worth doing.
Replace if: The compressor has failed on a unit older than 10 years. Compressor replacement can cost $500–$1,000, and an older unit may have other issues soon after.
Washing Machines
Repair if: The machine is less than 8 years old. Repairs like pump replacement, lid switch, or control board are usually cost-effective.
Replace if: The drum bearings have failed on a front-loader older than 7 years. Bearing replacement is labor-intensive and can approach the cost of a new machine.
Dryers
Repair if: Almost always. Dryers are mechanically simple and most repairs — heating element, thermal fuse, belt, motor — are inexpensive relative to the cost of a new unit.
Replace if: The drum has cracked or the motor has seized on a unit older than 12 years.
Dishwashers
Repair if: The unit is less than 9 years old. Most dishwasher repairs (pump, door latch, control board) are well under the 50% threshold.
Replace if: The tub has cracked or rusted through, or if the unit is an older model that uses significantly more water and energy than modern units.
Ovens & Ranges
Repair if: Almost always — ovens are built to last 15–20 years and most repairs are straightforward. Replacing a bake element, igniter, or thermostat is almost always worth doing.
Replace if: The control board has failed on a high-end unit and the cost of the board alone exceeds 50% of replacement cost.
